Why rear glass is different
Your rear windshield is tempered glass, like your side windows: when it breaks, it shatters into thousands of pebbles all at once. That's a safety feature, but it means there's no such thing as a rear windshield 'repair'. It's always a full replacement.
Rear glass also carries equipment a front windshield doesn't: defroster grid lines, antenna elements on many models, brake-light cutouts, and wiper hardware on hatchbacks and SUVs. We replace the glass, reconnect everything, and test the defroster before you leave.
What replacement involves
We vacuum the shattered glass out of the trunk, cargo area, and rear deck. It gets everywhere, and we know where it hides. Then we install glass matched to your vehicle with the correct defroster configuration, reconnect the electrical terminals, and verify the grid heats evenly.
Most rear windshield replacements take about 1–2 hours. With New England winters, a working rear defroster isn't optional, don't go into the season with a taped-up trash bag where your back glass should be.
Cost and insurance
Rear glass pricing varies more than windshields because of defroster, antenna, and wiper differences between models. Call with your year, make, and model and we'll quote you on the spot. If you carry comprehensive coverage, back glass is typically covered just like a windshield, and we bill your insurer directly.

No, rear glass is tempered and shatters completely when damaged, so replacement is the only option.
